EFT tapping, or Emotional Freedom Technique, pairs acupressure points from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with psychology. You tap along specific acupressure points and follow a script illuminating a particular issue.

Verbalizing and acknowledging an issue while activating the acupressure points allows the body to relax. Studies show EFT has a positive effect on the amygdala (the stress center of the brain) and the hippocampus (memory center of the brain). The amygdala and hippocampus are both triggered when we experience stress or fear. Tapping has also been proven to lower cortisol (stress hormone) within the body.

Tapping allows us to rewire associations we’ve made in the brain with certain issues/triggers and stress within our body. When we tap, we are creating new neural pathways within the brain. It’s been used extensively with trauma and PTSD survivors, and more. In 2017, I started a nightly practice meditating before I went to bed. I did this every night for over a year. Eventually, I began to feel energetic orbs moving on my palms, and I thought, huh—this has to mean something. It was an awakening to one of my gifts.

At the time, the only type of energy work I was aware of was Reiki. I decided to pursue Reiki training to learn more about this world. Although I am Reiki certified, I do not use the Reiki symbols during my sessions or practice the daily precepts.

Part of my personal ancestry is from Mexico, and I prefer to connect this gift to my studies of curanderismo. In this practice, sobadoras use hands-on healing, accupressure, and massage as a healing practice. And this feels more aligned for me, as I think it’s always important to root your practices in your personal ancestry when possible.
